One of our favourite things about Spain is the huge range of choice for Carnival across the regions. We’ve picked out a shortlist of some of the best towns to stop by whether you want an extravagant party, something for the whole family or the choice of a rural escape too.

Cadiz

The Carnival of Cadiz is one of the most well-known in Spain, with its celebrations lasting almost two weeks around the city. Its renowned music competition for groups can see over 100 applicants in the first rounds before narrowed down to the select performances in the final days of the carnival. The thrill of spending time in Cadiz during carnival season comes from the unity felt across the city as the parades and party atmosphere reach every corner of the town.

Constantina

If you want to enjoy the best of both worlds then Constantina should be your chosen Carnival-destination, the large parade takes place in the centre of town with locals and visitors dressing in elaborate costumes for the festivities. But with Constantina located in the Sierra Norte National Park the beautiful open meadows and enchanting forests provide a place to escape and explore when the bustle of the town becomes too much.

Reasons to visit Spain

Almeria

Almeria is a beautiful Spanish town with many great attractions to keep you entertained alongside the carnival; including the Alcazaba fortress and the large Cathedral to explore in the days surrounding the carnival. Then it all kicks off on February 27th where the streets will be filled with festivities, Almeria is particularly good if you’re travelling with kids due to the large children’s carnival day it runs for small children to join in the fun.

Carnival in Spain

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you fancy a trip off the mainland a visit to the island of Tenerife to see the Santa Cruz de Tenerife carnival; each year it is themed with this year floats, costumes and decorations all being in the style of Cartoons. This is one of the loudest carnivals in the region, where the government have passed the Holiday Act to allow noise restrictions to be lifted for full enjoyment of the festival. Of course, this means quiet can be hard to find on the island around this time.
