A Brief History of Mauritius

Located 2,000 miles off the east coast of Africa, Mauritius is approximately 40-square miles, and boasts a near perfect Indian Ocean climate.

Originally formed eight million years ago through volcanic activity, the land is extremely fertile allowing some highly distinctive floral species to grow, including bright lilies and trees such as the Casuarina.

Originally a Dutch colony, Mauritius was seized by Britain from France in 1810. After independence in 1968 it became a republic in 1992. Sugar plantations were developed during the 19th Century and were worked by slaves mainly from Africa. After the abolition of slavery, many immigrant workers were recruited from India. This mix of races has resulted in today’s colourful blend of population and religions. English is widely spoken and understood as most people are bilingual (English and French).
